On Monday, November 27, 2017, William "Rufus" Powell, 79, of Suffolk, VA went to be with the Lord. He was born in Sunbury, NC on November 22, 1938. He is predeceased by his parents, Hallett and Pearl Powell.

Rufus was a retiree from SUPSHIP Portsmouth and dedicated to his family, church, and community. Over the years of his life, he enjoyed working and volunteering in a variety of jobs and positions. He was a Ruritan, a member of the Joyce Ann Harrell Sunday School Class and Bethlehem Christian Church. Rufus was proud to represent the Holy Neck Borough 1998-2002 on the Suffolk City Council and was selected to serve as Vice Mayor from 2000-2002.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Katherine Powell; son and daughter-in-law, William Rufus Powell, Jr. and Kathleen; daughter and son-in-law, Susan P. Roberts and Dale; brother and sister-in-law, Bobby Powell and Peggy; sister, Frances Harrell; grandchildren, Alex Powell, Allan Roberts, Jacob Roberts, Lauren Iversen and Anna Powell; several nieces, nephews and countless friends.

A funeral service will be held Thursday, November 30, 2017 at 11:30 a.m. at Bethlehem Christian Church with Rev. Matt Winters officiating.  Burial will follow at Cypress Chapel Christian Church Cemetery. Friends may join the family for a time of visitation prior to the service from 10-11:30 a.m. at the church.
