William "Billy"
Edward Moore
November 7, 1937 – September 11, 2024
William Edward "Billy" Moore, age 86, went to his heavenly home early Wednesday morning, September 11th, 2024 with his dear wife of 59 years, Mollie Jones Moore, and their daughter, Elizabeth Jeanette Moore Todd (Mark) by his side. Billy and Mollie have been living in Cary, North Carolina since February of 2023 to be near their daughter and her family. Billy, the youngest of four children, was born in Norfolk, VA on November 7th, 1937 to the late Edward Harrison and Beulah Jeannette Haralson Moore.
Billy is survived by his older brother, Thomas Haralson Moore (O'Nita) of Franklin, VA. He was predeceased by his two sisters, Edna M. Howell (Robert) and Mildred M. White (Brasco).
Billy was a faithful member of Bethlehem Christian Church and the Joyce Ann Harrell Sunday School Class and deacon. He loved the Lord and projected that love with whomever he met and wherever he was. Billy worked wherever the Lord would lead him, whether visiting, helping to prepare meals or working on the Building and Grounds committee at his new residence. He was also very faithful in caring for the flowers on the patio at Woodland Terrace. Billy was a "people person" who never met a stranger in his walk of life!
Billy spent a portion of his life as an auto and truck mechanic for Johnson's Auto Service on Holland Road in Suffolk. In February 1971, he joined the Suffolk Fire Department Station One as a firefighter. After several years, he was promoted to Engineer of Engine 1. He remained in that position until his retirement in February of 1997. On his "days off" from the Fire Department he worked at Griffin Oil and Propane Company delivering oil and gas until he took over as the mechanic for their fleet of trucks. Billy retired from Griffin's in September of 1999. Billy served in the VA National Guard in Suffolk for eight years.
Once Billy finally retired, he and Mollie began traveling and spending winters in Tampa, FL and Mercedes, TX. They worked on the various campgrounds in maintenance and in the kitchen preparing meals for residents. The campers enjoyed Billy's chicken pot pie, spaghetti, and his famous fried chicken! Even after his retirement, Billy took on a part-time job with Beamon and Johnson's NAPA parts store and enjoyed seeing his "ole friends" at the various shops and garages he delivered parts to.
His working days came to an end once Mollie was diagnosed with breast cancer in December 2012. He decided he had worked long enough so he began to increase the size of his garden in order to be home. His family, friends, and neighbors were the beneficiaries of the abundance of his garden!
Besides his wife and daughter, he is survived by his twin grandchildren, Kathryn Elizabeth Todd a Senior at Mars Hill University of Mars Hill, NC and Sgt. Ryan Christopher Todd, stationed aboard the USS WASP. Billy is also survived by nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews and several cousins.
Billy's Celebration of Life Service will be held Friday, September 20th, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at Bethlehem Christian Church, 1549 Holland Rd., Suffolk, VA 23434. Burial with Fireman's Honors will follow at Holly Lawn Cemetery, 1525 N. Main St., Suffolk, VA. A reception will follow at the church fellowship hall.
