Walter Charles Nungesser, 93, passed away December 3, 2020. He was born in New Jersey, the son of the late Charles and Willamina Nungesser. He was predeceased by his wife, Joan Cooley Nungesser; and siblings, Harry, Dottie, Anna, and Lollie. Walter retired from the Merchant Marines as a Seaman after 25 years of service. Following his retirement, he went on to become a truck driver for Sobel and Kraus Trucking Company. He was a master model maker out of cardboard and paper. The rescue squad and Obici called him the Ship Builder. He was also known for his singing. He would sing to everyone he met in the hospital or that came to his house. His nicknames were Rocky and Vagabond but he was known by his grandchildren as "Poppop."
Walter is survived by his children, JoAnn E. Asbell, Sharon A. Taylor (Marshall), Edward Cohn (Jacqueline); grandchildren, Tifany (Russ), Elizabeth (Christopher), Justin W., Justin Cohn (Megan), Ashley, Brittany (Ben), Ryan, and Carolyn; great grandchildren, Zach, Roseli, Damian, Gracie, Charliegh and Maddie; sister, Eleanor Pearce (Frank); brother, Billy Schmidt (Sophia); and numerous nieces and nephews.
A graveside memorial service will be held Saturday, December 12, 2020 at 11 a.m. at Shiloh Cemetery on Shiloh Dr. in Windsor, VA with Pastor Rudy Pitscheneder officiating. Condolences may be registered online at www.parrfuneralhome.com.
