Obituary

Walter Hammerle, 89, of Suffolk, VA, passed away peacefully in his home on June 19th.  He was born in Bregenz, Austria, and after finishing an apprenticeship, left his hometown to travel and work abroad, including in Switzerland, Australia, Canada, and the United States.  In the early 1960's he met and married Charlotte, his wife of the past 59 years.  He retired in 2001 after over 40 years of dedicated and distinguished service with a manufacturing company located in Chesapeake, VA.

After retirement, Walter and Charlotte lived in Smithfield before becoming residents of the senior living community at Lake Prince Woods in Suffolk.  Born in the Alps, Walter loved skiing and outdoor activities.  He also enjoyed woodworking and repair projects and played a large role in repairing and updating the equipment and tools at the community's workshop.  Walter had a dynamic and outgoing personality that manifested joy throughout his family and community.  He enjoyed trips with Charlotte to visit his grandchildren, taking walks on the grounds to chat with his neighbors, and bringing treats to all the four-legged creatures of LPW.

Walter was preceded in death by his parents, Georg and Anna Hammerle, his siblings, Adolf Hammerle, Theresa Ettinger, and Anna Forti, and by his son, Christian Walter Hammerle.

Walter is survived by his wife, Charlotte J. Hammerle; son, Kurt Hammerle and wife, Jennifer (Weiss); grandchildren, Amelia, Sophia, and Nickolaus; and numerous nieces and nephews and extended family in Europe.

A Catholic service in his memory will be held in the Portsmouth Room of Lake Prince Woods, 100 Anna Goode Way, Suffolk, VA 23434 at 2:00 pm, Thursday, June 29, 2023.  Burial will be private at Nansemond-Suffolk Cemetery.  Fond memories, words of comfort, and condolences may be shared with the family online at www.parrfuneralhome.com.
