Smithfield - Virl Miles Cox Waterfield, 94, passed away on 23 November 2014. She was born in Portsmouth, VA on 24 July 1920, the daughter of Reuben Lee and Lulyan Outland Miles. She spent her younger years in Carrsville, VA. Her teaching profession then brought her to Smithfield where she met and married her husband Francis M. Cox and some years later, John W. Waterfield, both of whom preceded her in death. Survivors include her daughter Gail Robin Cox and her husband Marvin and her son Francis M. Cox and his wife Laurajo and six grandchildren, John Miles Hunt, Alexandra Outland Hunt, Frank Miles Cox, Laura Mekenzie Newkirk, Noah Rueben Edward Cox, and Fletcher Christian Chorley Cox; and four great grandchildren, Andrea Rosales Cox, Skyler Newkirk, Miles August Hunt, and Addison Marie Cox. She was a lifelong educator in the Isle of Wight and Newport News School Systems. She was educated at James Madison University and the College of William and Mary. She was an avid Bridge player all of her life, and achieved "Life Master." The family wishes to thank Michele Shannon, whose loving care made Virl's independence possible in her later years.
