Obituary

Virginia "Sherry" Sherrill Hayes Atwood, 79, passed away October 1, 2025.  She was born in Richmond, VA the daughter of the late James and Juanita Hayes.  Sherry was predeceased by her husband of 23 years, Claud "Dan" Daniel Atwood.  She retired as the manager of the Radiology department at Portsmouth General Hospital.  Sherry lived a life of leadership and service.  That devotion to her community began in 1984 when she joined the Windsor Lions Club and that membership led to numerous leadership positions.   She is a Past District Governor of District 24-D and has had 15 years perfect attendance, including 10 years as a member of the Windsor Lions Club and 7½ years in the Western Branch Lioness Club. Sherry has been president of both clubs and held all elected offices except secretary in these clubs.  Sherry has served District 24-D as District Governor, Vice District Governor, Cabinet Secretary, Region II and Zone G Chairman, President of the Lions Mobile Sight & Hearing Unit of District 24-D, Youth Exchange Camp counselor (4 years) and chairman of Leadership & Development, Governor's Ball and Fall Conference.  Sherry was president of the Lions of Virginia Foundation, the Lions Charity Foundation, as well as being on the Lions Medical Eye Bank Board for a number of years.  Sherry is a Melvin Jones Fellow and has received the International President Certificate of Appreciation, District Governor's Appreciation Award (3), District Governor's Certificate of Appreciation (3), President's Appreciation Award (2) and the Proud Lion Award.

Sherry enjoyed reading, bridge, and all Lions activities. She was active in her church and a member of Windsor Woman's Club.  She was a social butterfly and never met a stranger.  She saw the good in everyone and was always willing to help anyone in need.  Her greatest accomplishment was her family whom she deeply loved.

Sherry is survived by her children, Tracey V. Montero (Francisco), Melissa R. Whited (Ben), Stephany D. Tysor (Vance), Stephan H. Atwood (Glynnis); grandchildren, Brandon, Andrew, Gregory, Tammara, and Sharon; great grandchildren, Autumn, Levi, Jayce, Knox, Elizabeth, Amelia, Xander, Kenna, Walker, Gareth, Aislinn, Athena, and Ava; brothers, William C. Hayes (Peggy) and James F. Hayes (Diana); sisters-in-law, Marsha Atwood, Susie Atwood, and Mary Logan; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held Sunday, October 5, 2025 at 3 p.m. at Parr Funeral Home & Crematory with Chaplain Scott Baker officiating.  Friends may join the family for a time of visitation one hour prior to the service from 2 - 3  p.m. at the funeral home.  Memorial donations may be made to the Windsor Lions Club.  Condolences may be registered online at www.parrfuneralhome.com.
