Russell Gwaltney, 90, passed away May 29, 2023.  He was born in Sussex County, VA the son of the late Wilfred Williams Gwaltney and Madeline Bush Gwaltney.  He was predeceased by his wife of 59 years, Josephine Simms Gwaltney; and sisters, Jean G. Belcher and Maxine G. Harrup.  Russell was a United States Navy veteran having served in the Korean War.  He later went to work and retired as a maintenance manager for different lumber companies.  He was a member of Providence United Methodist Church.  He was also a member of the Suffolk American Legion.  He loved working in his garden and fishing.

Russell is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Steven W. and Sharon P. Gwaltney; daughter and son-in-law, Nancy G. and Donnie M. Eason; five grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; sister, Donna G. Grinnell; brothers, David Nelson Gwaltney and Henry Thornton Gwaltney; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held Thursday, June 1, 2023 at 11 a.m. at Parr Funeral Home & Crematory with Rev. Lisa Meyers officiating.  A time of visitation will follow the service at the funeral home.  Burial with military honors will follow at 12:30 p.m. at Nansemond-Suffolk Cemetery.  Memorial donations may be made to Providence United Methodist Church Memorial Fund at 3109 Providence Rd, Suffolk, VA 23434.  Condolences may be registered online at www.parrfuneralhome.com.
