Robert James Matthews, 74, of Suffolk, VA passed away on August 8, 2009. A native of Philadelphia, PA, he was the son of the late William Matthews and Genevieve Dillon Matthews. He was also predeceased by his daughter, Cynthia Matthews. He served in the U. S. Army and the Korean Conflict.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Catherine F. Matthews; sons and daughters-in-law: Robert and Anna Matthews, Ronald and Margaret Matthews; and Richard and April Matthews; seven grandchildren, Billy, Patrick, Ronnie, Ryan, Chrissie, Kimmie and Jenna; three great grandchildren, Josalyn, Abby and Xzavier; a brother, Jerry Matthews and family; a brother-in-law, Joseph Ford and also survived by many nieces and nephews. Billy and Patrick were raised by their grandparents, Robert and Catherine Matthews.

Funeral services will be private.
