Obituary

Robert "Bob" Anthony Schneider, Sr., age 87, a proud U.S. Navy veteran of 32 years, peacefully set sail on his final journey from his home in Suffolk, Virginia, on the morning of January 25, 2025.

Bob was born on Father's Day, June 20, 1937, in his family home in Chattaroy, Washington.

Once he graduated in 1955 from Riverside High School, also located in Chattaroy, he enlisted in the United States Navy Reserve. He was in the reserves for twelve years. Then in November 1968 he again enlisted for active duty in the Navy and went on to serve twenty years retiring as a Storekeeper Chief. He was very proud and very honored to serve his country. His time in service instilled in him a deep sense of duty, resilience, and camaraderie, values he carried throughout his life.

Beyond his service, Robert was a devoted husband for 56 years to Shirley Hebda Schneider. He was a loving father to his children Robert A. Schneider, Jr. (Shelby), Katherine M. Forsten (Mark), Gordon T. Schneider (Carla), Matthew M. Thiele (Natalie), Donald J. Schneider II (Jennifer), and Olga B. Hrebin (Brian). He very much loved his fur babies Bella, the diva, and Dexter, his loyal companion who followed him everywhere. He also very much loved being a father, a grandfather and a great-grandfather, as he was always ready to share a story, as he had many, many stories. He was also a favorite uncle to his many nieces and nephews who will forever hold his memories and their adventures close to their hearts. His love for all members of his family was unconditional.

Robert was a man of strong character, kindness, generosity and he possessed a great sense of humor. He found joy in life's simple pleasures. He enjoyed the Sunday family drives, often taking the scenic route so as to enjoy not only the scenery but he also enjoyed spending quality time with his children. Not sure the children felt the same? Bob was also a passionate genealogist, as he spent countless hours tracing family histories insuring that the stories of those who came before him will not be forgotten.

Whether sharing his years of wisdom, gardening, or simply enjoying time with family, he left an indelible mark on all who knew him. He was the rock of his family, and his legacy of love, strength, and perseverance will live on in those he leaves behind.

He is now reunited with his parents, John M. and Olga E. Schneider, his six siblings, other family members and close friends who passed before him. They will embrace him once again with open arms along with their love, joy and happiness.

A celebration of life for Robert A. Schneider, Sr. will be held on March 29, 2025, at St. Mary of the Presentation Catholic Church, 202 S Broad St., Suffolk, VA 23434.  The viewing will be held at the church at 9:00 AM. It will be followed by a Catholic Mass, celebrated by Father Rogelio Ongen, at 10:00 AM. Burial will follow at the family cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Disabled American Veterans (www.DAV.org) or your local Humane Society (www.humanesociety.org).

Robert leaves behind a legacy of love, service, and family. Though he will be deeply missed, his memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
