Reginald Carter,
Jr.
August 31, 1939 – July 15, 2021
Reginald Carter, Jr., age 81, of Carrollton, VA, passed quietly on July 15, 2021 at Riverside Healthy Living Center in Smithfield, VA. Born August 31, 1939 in Bluefield, VA. Reginald was the son of Reginald Carter, Sr. and Beatrice (Froe) Carter. He attended Tazewell High School, while also working at Carter Printing and Sign Co. He then went on to join the United States Army. As part of his military service, he successfully completed paratrooper training and then served as a guard at Spandau Prison in West Germany, overseeing Nazi war criminal, Rudolph Hess. After receiving an honorable discharge, he served in the U.S. Army Reserve and worked in the printing industry. He then went on to teach printing at Lorton Federal Prison in Lorton, VA. That led to him joining the U.S. Capitol Police and then becoming a Deputy United States Marshal. He received many commendations for his special assignment work, including with the U.S. Marshals SWAT Team and the DEA. One of the most telling things about Reginald's character was when he captured a high ranking organized crime figure. As he was delivering the man for transport, he turned to Reginald and said, "I gotta admit… I respect the way you took me in." In retirement, Reginald worked as a court security officer for various federal courthouses. It was while protecting the U.S. Court of Appeals in Pasadena, CA that he met his wife, an attorney who worked there.
He is survived by his wife, Alice Bennison, sisters Regina Crockett (Ernest Crockett) and Susan Slaughter (Clarence Slaughter), four nephews, eight nieces, two godchildren and many friends, as well as his beloved dog, Marley. Deceased siblings: Ivanne Stewart (Taft Stewart), Jacqueline Grimes (Elbert Grimes), Deborah Carter, Jauncie Whitfield (Bert Whitfield) and Froe Carter.
He will be laid to rest at the Albert G. Horton Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Suffolk, VA on August 13th at 2PM.
Reginald Carter, Jr.: Beloved husband, brother, uncle and friend. A man of honor and integrity… a true inspiration and role model to those who knew him.
We ask that our Lord and Savior now accept His departed child into the great Kingdom of our Heavenly Father.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 4416 Expressway Drive, Virginia Beach, Virginia 23452.
