On Wednesday, August 3rd, 2022, at 4:35 pm, our Mom, Ramona Marie (Simon) Riggs peacefully transitioned from our physical world, to the spiritual, and Eternal Life with our Lord Jesus Christ. Surrounded by Family, Mom passed from natural causes after a full life of 93 years, filled with love!
Born in Baltimore, MD, on March 5, 1929, Ramona was the last surviving child of the six children born to the late Joseph Bernard Simon and Rose Marie (Massell) Simon. She grew up among the row houses of Baltimore, MD, where the family business, Simon's Bakery, still operates today. After attending Catholic School and Secretarial School, Ramona worked for C&P Telephone as a switchboard operator. Mom met the love of her life, Samuel Newton Riggs, at a local swimming pool, as he did his best to impress her with his diving board prowess. They married in 1949, while Dad was still attending the University of Maryland, School of Dentistry.
In 1951, they had their first child, Larry, and, in 1952, after Dad's College graduation, moved to an apartment at Robbins Corner in Virginia Beach, VA, where Dad opened a dental practice, and Mom became his first Dental Assistant. In 1953, they moved to Forest View Drive in the Diamond Springs Subdivision, where their second child, Michael, was born. It was during this pregnancy that Mom obtained her Private Pilot's License, soloing for the first time. They moved to Thoroughgood in 1959, and Dad opened Thoroughgood Dental Center. Two additional children, Todd and Holly, were added to our family.
Throughout her life, Ramona would be influenced by her love for Christ. First, as a Catholic School student and later taking on her husband's faith of the United Methodist Church, we attended services at Baylake United Methodist Church and then Nimmo United Methodist Church. Upon Dad's passing, Mom went to live with her daughter, Holly, and found a new Christian family in Village Church, Suffolk, VA. Throughout her life, Mom has always been a kind and generous person, giving to multiple charities every year. However, her favorites were always her church, Village Church, Suffolk, VA, and Stonebridge School, Chesapeake, VA, a Christian based school attended by her grandchildren.
A loving mother and homemaker, Ramona answered to "Mom," from the kids, "Mona," from Dad, and later in life "Nana," from the grandkids. She was warm, gentle, strong, and giving.
Ramona was predeceased by her loving husband of 49 years, Dr. Samuel N. Riggs; son, Todd A. Riggs; siblings, Bobby, Tommy, Jerry, Shirley, and Jane. She is survived by her sons, Lawrence W. Riggs (Mary), Michael D. Riggs (Debbie); daughter, Holly M. Hicks (Brian); daughter-in-law, Pamela Riggs; grandchildren, Stacy DeSalsi, Stephen Riggs, Katie Northington, Chelsea Hicks, and David Hicks; great grandchildren, Kalee Green, Cameron DeSalsi, Troy DeSalsi, Hunter Riggs, and Brenna Muir; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A "Celebration of Mom's Life" will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, September 9, 2022, at Oakland Christian Church, 5641 Godwin Blvd, Suffolk, VA 23434, officiated by Pastor Bill Powell of Village Church, Suffolk, VA. Memorial donations in Mom's honor may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 840692, Dallas, TX 75284-0692. The Riggs Family would like to offer a special note of "Thanks!" to Amedisys Hospice and in particular, Holly Warren, RN, and Doris Biederman, CNA, for the kind, attentive and professional care Mom received in her final days. God bless!
