Philip E. Buchanan 76, beloved husband and father, died on October 26, 2007, after a long illness. He was born in Lexington, Virginia, and was the son of Greenlee Walker Buchanan and Birdie Mae Lobell Buchanan. He is survived by his wife Janet Buchanan, his daughter Bonny Henderson and her husband Gregory Henderson, daughter Dr. Scotty Buchanan and her husband Dr. Lloyd Faul, Jr., and daughter Greenlee Naughton and her husband Eugene Naughton, Jr. He is survived by six grandchildren: Justin, Corey, and Taylor Henderson; Abby, Samantha, and Patrick Naughton. Other survivors include his brother Leon Buchanan of Charlottesville and his sister Emma Golde O'Donnell of Georgia and several nieces and nephews, and his beloved bichon frise, Molly.
Mr. Buchanan taught English and Philosophy at Frederick College, Portsmouth, Virginia, and Tidewater Community College for 35 years. He graduated from the University of North Carolina and earned his graduate degree from the University of Virginia. He continued his postgraduate education at Harvard University and Oxford University, England. He was a published author and a former member of the Teachers of English Southern Association of Colleges.
Mr. Buchanan was an accomplished trumpet player and led his own dance band during college. He was a member of the Tidewater Community Concert Band and the University of North Carolina Alumni Band until his illness prevented his participation. He was co-owner of Buchanan's on Main Street in Smithfield, Virginia. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Parr Funeral Home, Suffolk, Virginia. The family will receive friends, colleagues, and former students at the Smithfield Inn, 112 Main St., Smithfield, Virginia on Sunday, October 28 from 5 to 8 pm. A graveside service will be conducted by Reverend Richard Goodman and Reverend Connie Jackson at Riverview Cemetery in Waynesboro, Virginia, on Tuesday, Oct. 30 at 2:00 pm. A reception will follow the service at the Iris Inn, 191 Chinquapin Dr., Waynesboro, Virginia. The family requests in lieu of flowers that contributions be made to Isle of Wight County Humane Society, Shelter Fund, P.O. Box 273, Smithfield, VA, 23431, to honor Mr. Buchanan's love of animals.
