Obituary

On July 4, 2026, Nell Worrell Williams stopped worrying about everyone else’s happiness and wellbeing and let herself fall into the loving arms of our Lord. She was 100 years young and proud of it. She loved everyone she met, and was loved in return by all who knew her.

Born Nell Odell Worrell on October 14, 1925 in Holland, Virginia to Samuel James “Sammy Jim” and Mary Jane Holland Worrell, she was their eighth of eleven children. She was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers, five sisters, and all of their spouses. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Elbert P. Williams, their unnamed infant daughter, and their daughter-in-law, Sarah Alwood Williams.

Nell was a 1942 graduate of Holland High School, and was the last surviving member of that class. At the tender age of 16, she moved to Suffolk, attended business school, and began her career as a secretary and bookkeeper for Kelly Kendrick. She also worked at Suffolk Motor Company and Thomas E. Shotton Refrigeration before “retiring” to work with her sisters Mary Edith Felton Carter, Gladys Spivey, and Lucille Judkins as a seamstress at Lucille’s in Downtown Suffolk.

Nell was a member of First Baptist Church on Main Street for 84 years.

Nell is survived by her children, Becki Williams of Suffolk, Nelson Williams (Rosemary Lunsford) of Raleigh, NC, Mary Murden (Eddy) of Chester, VA, and Phil Williams (Georgia) of Pendleton, NC. She is also survived by five grandsons, Sam Williams of Durham, NC, David Williams (Jaleh Amo Abedini) of Raleigh, NC, Lucas Williams (Emma) of Pendleton, NC, Patrick Williams (Kiera) of Raleigh, NC, and Parker Williams (Callie) of Yale, VA, and four great-grandchildren, Olivia, George, Nala, and Audie.

There will be a visitation at Parr Funeral Home from 7:00 – 8:00 pm on Wednesday, July 8, and a service at Parr Funeral Home at 11:00 am on Thursday, July 9. All are welcome to attend either or both events. Burial will be private at Holly Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Heart Association (heart.org) or the National Audubon Society (act.audubon.org) in her memory.  Condolences may be registered online at www.parrfuneralhome.com.
