Nather Crutchlow
Gray
April 1, 1932 – December 3, 2021
Nather Catherine Crutchlow Gray was born in Lynchburg, VA, the daughter of Irving Burruss and Lucile Virginia Blankenship Crutchlow. She was the sister of I.B. Crutchlow, Jr.; Lucille "Echo" Crutchlow Hagan; Nancy Clarice Crutchlow Best Coley, her identical twin; Lena Ann Crutchlow Ellis; Ella Sue Crutchlow Stewart; and Dorothy Page Crutchlow. She is survived by her husband of 70 years, Hugh Alton Gray; her son, Jeffrey Hugh Gray, Sr.; and her daughter Cynthia Lynn Gray Ward. Her grandchildren are Amy Leigh Gray Moxley, Benjamin Charles Ward, Sarah Elizabeth Gray Mikac, Grayson Paul Ward, and Jeffrey Hugh Gray Jr. She is survived by many loving in-laws and other relatives, including six great-grandchildren. Also special to her were Yvonne Sheri Martin Gray, who was married to Jeff, and Joseph Charles Ward, who was married to Cynthia.
Places Nather lived and loved include Virginia, the Outer Banks of North Carolina, and Florida. She spent her final years at the Columbia Presbyterian Community in Lexington, SC, assisted by the amazing and loving staff.
Joyous memories of Nather include her Hollywood fashionable prissy nature, storytelling prowess, fondness of dancing, love of musicals (South Pacific, Gone With the Wind, and the Sound of Music), great back scratches, worshiping at her United Methodist churches, educating her grandchildren on proper southern etiquette, frying lace cornbread, and baking "Potpourri" with Real Vanilla extract (the true secret to a happy marriage). She was definitively the lead role in her own Clark Gable romance. She was always ready to spare a banana to anyone who entered her warm kitchen. She loved Bridge, Balderdash, and Bruce Benedict, her favorite cat.
Nather will be remembered as The Mama, by blood or friendship, to so many people on her journey through life.
The family has held a private memorial service at the Presbyterian Community chapel. A graveside service will be held Saturday, April 2, 2022 at 11:30 a.m. Holly Lawn Cemetery with Rev. Robert Cofield officiating. Friends may join the family for a time of visitation an hour prior to the service from 10-11 a.m at Parr Funeral Home & Crematory in Suffolk, Virginia.
Memorials may be made to the Employee Assistance Fund of the Columbia Presbyterian Community, 700 DaVega Dr., Lexington, SC 29073 or to a charity of one's choice.
