Obituary

Morgan Odom Smith, 90, passed away August 28, 2017 after a brief illness. He was born in Portsmouth, VA to the late Arthur Spur and Bertha Bliss Smith. He was predeceased by his wife of 66 years, Elizabeth Carolyn Smith, a sister, Ethel Smith Ward and brothers, Sherwood, Rodger and a brother who died at two years old. He was a member of Oakland Christian Church for over 68 years. He served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict. Morgan's love of life, after family, was farming. He enjoyed raising hogs and planting many crops of peanuts, corn, soybeans, and a large garden. Morgan never met a stranger and always had a joke to tell.

Morgan is survived by a daughter, Betty Smith Dodd; son in law, Richard W. Dodd; grandchildren, Kevin Morgan Dodd and Crystal Dodd Jackson and husband, Joshua; great grandchildren, Olivia Morgan Jackson and Carter Grey Jackson; brother in law, Clarence Umphlette; sister in law, Emily Umphlette; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Morgan's funeral will be 11am, September 1, 2017 in Oakland Christian Church with Rev. Wayne Gardner officiating. Burial will be in Newman Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please donate to your local animal shelter, in honor of his love of animals.

Special thanks to his niece, Peggy Hughes, who was always there for him and neighbor, John Clarke, who was always there when he was needed. Also James Ashley, who took him to VA appointments. Thanks to caregiver, Stacey Washington, for her loving care and companionship of "little man". Morgan thought the world of each of you.

The family would like to thank the church members, who showed their love and kindness, especially Leroy Howell, who drove him to church every Sunday. Register condolences on www.parrfuneralhome.com.
