Speight Jones
October 15, 1935 – May 27, 2018
Mary Jane Jones, 82, joined her beloved husband, James at the gates of Heaven Sunday, May 27, 2018 while surrounded by her family. Born in Gates County, NC to the late Isaac B. and Irene Mayo Polson Speight, she was a long-time resident of the Whaleyville section of Suffolk. She retired from Hampton City Schools food service after 20 years of devoted work. A proud member of Whaleyville United Methodist Church; and a former Eastern Star Member. In recent years she became a devoted member of The Virginia Country Music Association (VCMA) also serving on the board of directors. She spent her free time with her dear friend and adopted "sister", Elizabeth Shoemaker enjoying the music played by the VCMA bands and joining in their bimonthly Jamborees.
She was very loved by numerous friends, she never met a person who didn't fall in love with her. She was a very generous person who was famous for her homemade chocolate goodies, peanut brittle, and cookies. Her weekends were spent with her 3 children enjoying their special times together. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 51 years, James; sisters, Ruth Marie and Margaret "Molly" Woyer; and brother, Robert "Bubba" Speight. As well as her sweet dogs, ET and Taco.
She is survived by her army; children, Neal and Janice Jones, Mary "Dee" and Larry Diaz, Glenn and JoAnne Jones; sisters, Linda Alexander (Donald), and Dot Patermaster (Jan); grandchildren, Neysa (Jeffrey), Christopher, Jacob, Casey (Eric), David, Robert (Caitlin), and James; and 9 great grandchildren who will all miss her greatly.
A funeral service will be held Thursday, May 31, 2018 at 1 p.m. at Whaleyville United Methodist Church with Rev. Jack Meservey PhD officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Friends may join the family for a time of visitation prior to the service from 11- 1 p.m. at the church. Memorial donations may be made to the church. Condolences may be registered online at www.parrfuneralhome.com.
