Mary Layne Vaughan, 65, 6411 Whaleyville Boulevard, Suffolk, passed away on January 30, 2008 and went home to be with her Saviour, Jesus. She was born on March 29, 1942, in Hampton, VA the daughter of the late Raymond B. Mitchell and Ann Dougherty Mitchell and was predeceased by her husband, Robert L. Vaughan. Layne retired from A & P Tea Company. She was a member of Whaleyville United Methodist Church where she taught a children's Sunday School Class. Through the years she served on numerous committees as well as being a member and President of the Whaleyville United Methodist Women. Layne was a very devoted member of the Whaleyville Volunteer Fire Department, Ladies Auxillary for many years.

She is survived by a sister and brother-in-law Gay and Junior Pierce of Sunbury, NC; a brother and sister-in-law Billy and Rose Mitchell of Suffolk; a nephew Chuck and wife Tracy Pierce of Windsor; a niece Mary Ann and husband Phillip Ferebee of Sunbury, NC.; a great nephew Calvin Wayne Pierce; a sister-in-law, Betty Lou Miller of Seattle, WA and family Danny, Brian, Diana and Kevin; a great niece, Sadie Miller and long time special friends, Charlie Russell and Charles and Carolyn Brothers of the town of Whaleyville.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 2, 2008, at 1:00 p.m. at Whaleyville United Methodist Church, officiated by Rev. George Griffin. The burial will follow in the Church cemetery. Friends may visit the family at other times at 529 Kilby Shores Drive. Memorials may be given to the Whaleyville United Methodist Church, P. O.
