Martha Barnes Winn, 80, a resident of Zuni for 35 years, passed away Thursday, March 29, 2012, at home after a brief illness. Martha Lou Barnes was born in 1931 to the late Bettie Harper and Dester R. Barnes in Angier, N.C., the seventh of their eight children. She graduated from Angier High School where she played on the girls' basketball team. After moving to Portsmouth, she worked in a number of positions with the Navy and Coast Guard. She was an active member of the Elizabeth Eley Sunday School class at Tucker Swamp Baptist Church and a past president of the Suffolk Women's Golf Association. In addition to golf, she enjoyed playing bridge and traveling, especially with her grandchildren.

Martha was the loving wife of John A. Winn and mother of sons John, Jr. (wife Leslie) of Chesapeake and Kimball of Falls Church, and daughter Jennifer Winn Griffin (husband Wayne) of Zuni. She was the devoted grandmother of Kendall Griffin and Martha Ann Griffin of Zuni. She is also survived by her sister, Geraldine Tilley (husband Roy) of Fuquay-Varina, N.C. and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends on Friday from 6 - 8 p.m. at Parr Funeral Home, 3515 Robs Drive, Suffolk. Funeral services will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 31, 2012 at Tucker Swamp Baptist Church, 37527 Seacock Chapel Road, Zuni, with Dr. Gene Primm officiating. Interment in the church cemetery immediately following the service. Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the American Cancer Society.
