Marshall Herbert
Ellis
January 2, 1946 – April 21, 2023
Marshall Herbert Ellis, 77, passed away Friday, April 21, 2023. Born to the late Charles H. Ellis and Lucille Cherry Ellis, Marshall was a retired English Professor at Tidewater Community College, the Music Director at Our Saviour Lutheran Church in Virginia Beach and a member of Christ and St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Norfolk.
Left to cherish his memory is his loving Husband of 6 years, Brian K. Birmingham. The two met in 2003, and had a 20-year enduring relationship until his passing.
Marshall was an avid reader who enjoyed reading Literary Greats, as well as mystery novels. His favorite authors included Stuart Woods, Daniel Silva, and James Patterson. He had a passion for food, for all around the world. There was nothing he wouldn't try. He especially loved scallops, which he described as his absolute favorite food.
Throughout his years of teaching, he was described as a great mentor, and left a lasting impression on several of his students. There were countless times when he was approached by past students, in distant places, who recognized him. They would often tell him how much he impacted their lives, and that he was often one of their favorite professors.
His passion for music started at age 9, when he first took music lessons. His first job as an organist started at age 15, and he continued to play until he was 76 until he retired as Music director of Our Saviour Lutheran Church in Virginia Beach.
He enjoyed trips to Provincetown, Massachusetts and Wilton Manors, Florida. Marshall was truly an angel on earth. Not much upset him, and he always maintained a calm, composed demeanor. There will never be another like him. He will truly be missed and his memories will forever be cherished.
