Mae Darden
Whitmore
April 3, 1944 – June 7, 2018
Mae Darden Whitmore, 74, passed away June 7, 2018. She was born in Nansemond County, VA the daughter of the late William Goldie Darden and Virgie Johnson Darden. She was predeceased by her sisters, Doris D. Hill and Minnie D. Lankford; and brothers, William C. Darden, Thomas R. Darden, and James A. Darden. Mae formerly worked as a teacher's assistant and bus driver for Suffolk Public Schools and Nansemond Suffolk Academy. She was a member of Suffolk Christian Church and the Adult Bible Class. She was also a member of the Suffolk Woman's Club, the Y Ladies, and the Thursday Crafters Club.
Mae is survived by her husband of 52 years, Robert "Poopie" Bland Whitmore; daughter and son-in-law, Lisa Whitmore Rath (David); son and daughter-in-law, Joseph "Jay" William Whitmore (Dawn); 4 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; sisters, Glenn D. Taylor, Sandra D. Cook, and Joyce D. Buhls; numerous nieces and nephews; and honorary sister, Barbara Slagle.
A funeral service will be held Monday, June 11, 2018 at 11 a.m. at Suffolk Christian Church with Rev. Michael D. Halley, Rev. Kevin Eley, and Rev. Charles W. Thompson officiating. A reception will be held immediately following the service. The burial will follow at 2 p.m. at Beaver Dam Baptist Church Cemetery. Friends may join the family for a time of visitation Sunday afternoon from 2-4 p.m. at Parr Funeral Home & Crematory. Memorial donations may be made to Suffolk Christian Church Churchwide Fellowship Fund. Condolences may be registered online at www.parrfuneralhome.com . The family would like to give special thanks to all the staff at Sentara Norfolk General Heart Hospital for the love and compassion they showed.
