Obituary

Lisa Annette Taylor Tuhaika, 59, unexpectedly was called home to be with her Lord on Sunday, August 27, 2023. Born in St. George's, Bermuda on Monday, April 27, 1964, Lisa is the daughter of the late Grady Roy Taylor and Judith Grey Taylor. She was predeceased by her grandparents, Charles Hunter and Inez Locke Taylor, George Henry Grey and Clarice Victoria Dunstan Grey, and niece, Joy Staley. Lisa was born at Kindley Air Force Base in Bermuda, leaving as an infant when her father retired from the Navy. She spent two years surrounded by extended family in Crossett, Arkansas, where she was joined by sister, Terri Lynn. Father Grady re-enlisted and the family removed to Puerto Rico where Lisa was blessed with sister, Laura Kaye. Lisa attended preschool in Puerto Rico and her first grade began in Australia and finished on Midway Island in the Pacific. Second grade was in Key West, Florida and Pacific Beach, Washington where brother, Kenneth Alan joined the family in 1973.

Lisa was an excellent student, her grades were steady and always good. She was Valedictorian of her senior class at Kellam High School Class of 1982 and the DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) honored her with a tea party which really impressed her Australian grandmother. Lisa was a great example and an inspiration to her siblings. Laura writes, "I cannot find the words to express my grief over the terrible loss of my very first best friend, confident, cheerleader, and encourager. She was the best big sister I could have asked for. I will dearly miss her quick wit, keen observations, and especially her kind, thoughtful, and generous soul." While at Kellam High School during her senior year, Lisa worked part time at the Lynnhaven Mall. Her studies at ODU (Old Dominion University) followed. Lisa was fortunate in that she was hired during the summer as a student at NAVSEA, where her father worked and this temporary job evolved into a student work program which paid for her tuition and books at ODU leading to her present position at NAWCTSD (Naval Air Warfare Center Training Systems Division).

She was the In-Service Engineer (ISE) and Contracting Officer Representative (COR) supporting Submarine Training at Submarine Learning Facility in Norfolk, Virginia, where she put in long hours faithfully serving the USA for the past 30 years. Lisa was well loved and an important member of the Taylor family. She was steady, extremely thoughtful and always available to listen and give sound advice. An excellent researcher and wordsmith and always the peacemaker during sibling spats - very generous and extremely loyal. While on a business related visit to Hawaii, Lisa met her husband of 18 years, Johnny Tuhaika from Bellona in the Solomon Islands.

One of the greatest joys in Lisa's life was her two children; Leilani and Brendan. She loved them beyond measure and was so proud of their accomplishments and what great people they were growing up to be. They gave her so much pleasure and she beamed with pride when she spoke of them.

She is survived by her mother, Judith Grey Taylor; loving husband, Johnny S. Tuhaika; children, Leilani and Brendan Tuhaika; sisters, Terri Taylor Staley and Laura Taylor; brother, Kenneth Taylor (wife) Lucia LaRocca Taylor; nephews, John Staley, Kaide Taylor, Wyatt Taylor; and nieces, Jenna Staley and Jayne Staley.

The family is inviting friends to pay respects Tuesday, September 5, 2023 from 6-8:00 pm at Parr Funeral Home & Crematory, 3515 Robs Drive, Suffolk, VA 23434.
