Obituary

Leona Frances Umphlett, affectionately known as "NANA" or "GRANDMA" passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 4 in the quietness of her home.  Many of her family whom she loved more than life itself were at her side.  Born in Back Bay, VA, she was the daughter of the late Donald Elon and Elenora Fentress Culver.  Mrs. Umphlett was predeceased by her husband of more than 63 years, Elton A. "Buddy" Umphlett.  She also was predeceased by 4 sisters, Virginia Best, Carrie Strawhand, Iona Darbonne, and Mary Ward, and a brother, Donald E. Culver, Jr.  Very strong in her faith, she exemplified Jesus Christ in all that she did and said.  She was an active member of Raleigh Heights Baptist Church and the Hope Bible Class.  Mrs. Umphlett provided in home care for more than 15 families across the years which allowed many to remain in their own homes because of her love and compassion for them.  She loved to bake all kinds of cakes, pies, etc. often teaching her granddaughters along the way.  Finally, she cared for her husband for a number of years as his health was declining, which also allowed him to remain in their home.  She stood by the vows she took on Nov. 28, 1952 with "Buddy" that said for better or for worse as her health too was being affected by her constant care for him.  Left to continue her legacy are three daughters, Cindy M. Piercy (John), Becky Roth (Gary), and Joyce McGlone (Jerry); two sons, Elton A. Umphlett, Jr. and Donald E. Umphlett, Sr. (Shermaine); 22 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren.  The love and care that the Matriarch of this wonderful family showed to each one of them will live on in each of their lives for many generations to come.

The Celebration of her life will be at 2:30 pm on Sunday, July 8 at Raleigh Heights Baptist Church, 1000 Crowell Ave., Chesapeake, VA the Rev. Shannon Terhune will officiate.  A continued time of the reflection of her life and reception will follow in The Napier Hall.  Interment will be private beside her late husband in Rosewood Memorial Park.  Her wishes were for contributions to be made to her church for the ongoing of the gospel of Jesus Christ.  Parr Funeral Home & Crematory, 3515 Robs Dr., Suffolk, VA is serving the Mrs. Umphlett's family.  Condolences may be registered online at www.parrfuneralhome.com.
