Obituary

There is a void in our home which can only be filled with the love, breath, and compassion of our heavenly Father.

On Monday, November 25, 2024, Larry A. Dennis, loving husband and father, entered into eternal rest at the golden age of 68.

The only son of Walter and Annie Mae Dennis, Larry was born on June 22, 1956 and raised in Portsmouth, Virginia. He graduated from Cradock High School and continued his education at Norfolk State University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in Building Construction Technology. After receiving his degree, he went on to build (no pun intended) a successful career in his chosen profession.

While employed as a building inspector for the City of Portsmouth, he met his future wife, Carolyn Nowell. They united in marriage on November 7, 1992 and celebrated their 32nd anniversary less than three weeks prior to his passing.

In 2013, Larry retired after 29 years of dedicated service to the City of Portsmouth, and accepted employment with the City of Suffolk as a zoning inspector. During his tenure with Suffolk, he quickly excelled and was promoted to the position of plans examiner. In May of 2022, he decided to exit the workforce entirely for a well-deserved rest.

Permanent retirement afforded Larry the time to do the things he enjoyed most. A lazy day of fishing from a pier was one of his heart's desires. He was an avid Philadelphia Eagles fan and relished an exciting Sunday afternoon football game, especially when his team was playing. From childhood, Larry harbored a fascination for trains. He found their rhythmic sounds relaxing and would watch youtube videos of them for hours on end. Listening to 70s music was another one of his favorite pastimes. Parliament-Funkadelic never got old.

Larry was so many things to his family. He was a devoted provider and a consummate navigator who could read a road map in his sleep and safely get his family to and from any destination. He was the resident mechanic and our personal weatherman who warned us of impending threats. Larry was a staunch protector who bravely defended us from the scary things in life, like ominous spiders and things that go bump in the night. He was always available to give his grandkids a ride while offering a life or educational lesson en route. The hats he wore were too many to name. There was nothing he would not do for his family. To say he will be sorely missed is an understatement.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Annie Mae Dennis; a sister, Carla Lang; and a grandson, Josijah Porter.

He leaves to cherish his memories, his faithful wife, Carolyn Dennis; three daughters, Brittany Dennis, Tamera Dennis, and Tiffany Cuffee; three grandchildren, Jada Asberry, Alijah Porter, and Izajah Porter; a sister, Martha Darden; and a host of extended family members.

A visitation will be on Wednesday, December 4, 2024 between the hours of 11:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. at Parr Funeral Home & Crematory, 3515 Robs Drive, Suffolk, VA 23434. A private burial will immediately follow.
