Josephine Simms Gwaltney, 80 of Suffolk, VA passed away December 21, 2013. Born in Sussex Co., VA, she was the daughter of the late John Richard Simms, Sr. and Nannie Stephenson Simms. She was preceded in death by sisters, Bernice B. Gay and Helen Chesson and brothers, Charlie L Babb and John Richard Simms, Jr.

She is survived by her husband of 59 years Wilfred Russell Gwaltney; son and wife Steven W. and Sharon P. Gwaltney; daughter and husband Nancy G. and Donnie M. Eason; five grandchildren and eight great grandchildren; sisters Lina Sue Garner , Charlotte C. Simms, Rose S. Nurney, and brother William J. Simms.

Josephine retired as cafeteria manager of Elephants Fork Elementary School with 28 years of service. She was a member of Providence United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, December 23, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. at Parr Funeral Home and Crematory, officiated by Rev. Dr. Garland K. Hines ,Jr. followed by visitation. Burial will be Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. in Nansemond-Suffolk Cemetery. Friends may join the family other times at the residence.
