Obituary

John Ray "Whit" Whitley, 76, passed away at home on October 25, 2021. He was born on November 28, 1944 in Nansemond Co. In February 2020, John learned he had esophageal and liver cancer.

After graduating from Chuckatuck H.S., John worked at Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Shop 56 for 41 years before retiring. During that time, he served in the US Army in Vietnam.
John is predeceased by his father, Welton R. Whitley Sr. and wife, Iris; mother, Louise B. Copeland and husband, Jasper; two brothers, Alvin Whitley and wife, Syble and Roger Whitley Jr.; an infant sister; and brother in law, Steve Barnes.
John married Judy Baines 52 years ago on December 14, 1968. She and their two sons and their families survive him, Matthew D. Whitley Sr. and wife, Patricia and their children, Matthew Jr., Ashley and her fiancé, Brandon Hansin; J. Mark Whitley and wife, Stephanie, and their daughter, Grace; sister, Barbara W. Barnes; and sister in law, Kay S. Whitley.
John's graveside service will be 10:00 am on November 12, 2021 at Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery with Minister Jason Sadler officiating. Viewing will be available from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm at Parr Funeral Home & Crematory. Post condolences on parrfuneralhome.com .
