John Ernest DeVites, Jr., 75, passed away March 13, 2023.  He was born in Portsmouth, VA the son of the late John Ernest DeVites, Sr. and Martha Ann Turner DeVites.  He was predeceased by his son-in-law, Jeff David Bess.  John was a United States Army veteran having served during Vietnam.  He later went on to work and retired after 38 years as civil service employee for Norfolk Naval Shipyard and SUPSHIP.  He was a member of the American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, and VFW Post #280.  He was also a member of the Bass Masters Fishing Club and was an avid golfer.  John enjoyed woodworking out of his man-shed.  He loved traveling the world with Lanna and their best friends, Connie and Don Carter, on a cruise ship and visiting casinos.

John is survived by her wife of 52 years, Lanna Faye Collins DeVites; daughter, Kimberly DeVites Bess; son, John Ernest DeVites, III (Lindsey Hooper); grandchildren, Danielle Taylor Bess, Jeffrey Tyler Bess (Maddie), and Kalyn Marie DeVites; sisters, Lisa A. Mooney (Mark), Judy L. Winkler (Dana); aunt, Eunice Jones and her daughter, Sharon Jones.

A graveside service with military honors will be private and held at a later date at Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Kidney Foundation.  Condolences may be registered online at www.parrfuneralhome.com.
