John Augustus Ramsey, Jr. (Jack) of Ivor, Virginia, died at his home on June 5, 2006 having endured a long illness. His parents were John Augustus Ramsey and Nellie Cobb Ramsey of Isle of Wight County. Jack was born August 20, 1929, in Isle of Wight County, Virginia.
Jack is survived by his wife, Mildred Corvin Ramsey, whom he married August 11, 1956 in Roanoke, Va.; his daughter, Nancy Augusta Ramsey; and his sons: John Augustus Ramsey, III, Reed Corvin Ramsey and Edwin Cobb Ramsey; Reed's wife, Natalie Ramsey, and their children, Jaclyn Augusta Ramsey and Carly Reed Ramsey, all of Ivor.
John Augustus Ramsey, Jr. was a member of the Smithfield Baptist Church for more than 50 years and he attended Trinity United Methodist Church, Smithfield, Va.
Jack attended schools in Isle of Wight County and was a 1947 graduate of Smithfield High School (SHS). He was a member of SHS' first football team: he was very proud of his team and his teammates. He later attended Augusta Military Academy (1947 - 1948) and attended Virginia Polytechnical Institute (1948 - 1949) before returning to his love of farming.
Jack Ramsey, an agri-businessman, was involved with general farming all of his life planting peanuts, corn, soybeans and wheat. He enjoyed having a dairy operation and beef cattle over the years as well.
Jack Ramsey sought and developed opportunities to make life better for others. He was a member of the Smithfield Ruritans for 54 years; a member of the Smithfield Chamber of Commerce; a former member of the Nominating Committee for Community Electric Cooperative; a director for Isle of Wight Academy in its formative years as the school opened in 1967; the owner, operator and president of Ramsey Brothers, Inc. for 38 years; named Isle of Wight County's Farm Family in 1994; and a founding director of the Bank of Isle of Wight (BIW) in 1971.
His skills and interests in banking were evident as he assisted the Bank of Isle of Wight through its growth as it transitioned into the BB&T in Smithfield, Va. Jack was a Founding Director of the Bank of Isle of Wight, 1971; Director of the Bank of Isle of Wight, 1973; Chairman of the Board, Bank of Isle of Wight, 1990-2000; Director, James River Bankshares, 1996-2001; Vice Chairman, James River Bank/Colonial, 2000-2001; Director, First Virginia Banks, Inc./Hampton Roads, 2001-2002 when Jack retired at the end of the term.
The funeral service will be held Thursday, June 8, 2006, at 2:00 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church, Smithfield, Va., with the Rev. Will Montgomery officiating. Burial will follow in Mill Swamp Church Cemetery, Ivor, Va.
The family will be at the home.
