Obituary

JoAnne Staples Byrum, 84, of Suffolk, VA passed away Sunday, January 23, 2022 in Riverside Walter Reed Hospital in Gloucester, VA.
JoAnne was born in Martinsville, VA, the daughter of the late George W. Staples and Evelyn Adele Staples. JoAnne worked for General Electric (GE) until they closed, then worked at Lipton Tea for a number of years before becoming a Logistics Buyer and retiring from General Dynamics. JoAnne enjoyed 4 wheeling on the beach and fishing on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, working countless hours in her yard growing flowers, and vegetables, going to thrift stores locating treasures for herself and others. She was also an avid animal lover.
Joanne is predeceased by her husband, William Thomas "Tom" Byrum; brothers, John and David Staples; and her beloved Spunky.
She is survived by two sons, Garey Byrum (Nancy) of Zuni and Walter John Podruchny, Jr. (Helen) of Sanford, NC; daughters, Debra Sellers of Republic, MO, JoAnn Holt (Keith) of Sutherlin, VA, Susan Hensley (Michael) of Yale, VA, the late Cynthia Holt (William) of Danville, VA, and Betty Bailey (Randy) of Suffolk; grandchildren, Annie Machner, Lisa Byrum, Alex Ruppe, Ashley Kearney, Walter Jon Podruchny, Susan Wicker, Kathy Aponte, Vicki Shiver, James DeVan, Kapunahele Wong, Jennifer Wong-Chapman, Brandon Holt, Nicole Cundiff, Philippa Holt, Nicholas Holt, Debra Riggins, and Dennis Bailey; 39 great grandchildren; 7 great great grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Nancy Jane Byrum, Faye Staples and Mary Byrum; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A celebration of her life will be 2:00 pm, Friday, April 1, 2022 at Parr Funeral Home & Crematory. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to the Suffolk Humane Society, 412 Kings Fork Rd, Suffolk, VA 23434.
