Joan "JoEllen" Williams Gienger, 67, of Smithfield, VA passed away January 4, 2011. She was the daughter of the late Bernard and Mary Ellen Williams. JoEllen was a member of Benn's United Methodist Church. She was the general manager at Smithfield Gardens, where she worked for 25 years. She was a Virginia Certified Horticulturist and a member of the Tidewater Daylily Society.

She is survived by her husband of 19 years, John S. Gienger, daughters, Lori Nelms and husband, Billy of Smithfield, Tracie League and friend, Shawen Drewery of Smithfield, son, Brent Martin and wife, Joan of Ivor; 13 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; sister, Cheryl Combs and husband, Gary of Wakefield; brothers, Carter Williams and wife, Connie of Smithfield, Steve Williams and wife, Bernetta of Newport Richie, FL; and many loving nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held Friday, January 7, 2011 at 2 p.m. at Benn's United Methodist Church with Rev. O. H. Burton officiating. Burial will follow at St. Luke's Memorial Park. Friends may join the family at the residence Thursday night from 5 to 7 p.m. for a time of visitation.
