Obituary

Janice Q. Hess was called home by her Lord and Savior on August 14th, 2013 after a long and courageous battle with breast cancer. She was born in Galax, Virginia on October 15th, 1950 and grew up in Roanoke, Virginia. Janice was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who made a wonderful home for her family as they moved many times during her husband's career with the U.S. Army before settling in Smithfield, Virginia. Janice was also an accomplished photographer and partner with her husband at ViewFinder Photographic Art for many years.

Janice was preceded in death by her father, Coy C. Quesenberry, Sr.. She is survived by her husband, Gary L. Hess, her daughter, Lisa H. Pfahl and husband Todd D. Pfahl, and granddaughters Alexis and Natalie Pfahl. She is also survived by her mother, Gloria K. Quesenberry of Ocean Springs, Mississippi, brother Ronald R. Quesenberry and his wife Pam of Olive Branch, Mississippi, sister Peggy Q. Hartman and her husband Gary of Gautier, Mississippi, sister Debra Q. Feather and her husband Larry of Titusville, Florida, brother Coy Casey Quesenberry, Jr. and his wife Leah of Village Mills, Texas, sister Sharon Q. King of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and brother Glenn G. Quesenberry and his wife Ruth of McKinney, Texas, and by many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Janice was a loving and selfless person who always placed the needs of others above her own. Over the years of travel with the Army and her participation with the arts community in Hampton Roads, she made many friends who will remember her fondly and will miss her kind spirit and smile.

The family wants to offer a very special thanks to Dr. Kimberly Schlesinger and the entire staff at the Peninsula Cancer Institute and Riverside Regional Medical Center for their exceptional care and support during her seven year battle with breast cancer. There were many angels among the doctors, nurses and staff at Riverside who all worked tirelessly to provide her the care and concern that was so valuable and so very much appreciated.

A memorial service to celebrate Janice's life will be held at the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Hampton, Virginia on Saturday, August 24th, with Pastor Charles D. Bang officiating. The service will be at 10:30 AM, followed by a reception at the church. A private committal service will take place later for the family at St. Luke's Memorial Park in Smithfield, Virginia. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Janice's name to Susan G. Komen for the Cure, 5295 Greenwich Road, Suite 105, Virginia Beach, VA 23462.
