Obituary

Janet Lynn Poulson, a dedicated professional and cherished member of the community, passed away on May 22, 2026, in Richmond, Virginia. Born on August 27, 1961, she graced this world with her presence for 64 years.

Janet was state doubles tennis champion and distinguished alumna of Nansemond-Suffolk Academy, graduating with the class of 1979. She pursued higher education with fervor, earning a Bachelor of Science in Finance from the Pamplin College of Business at Virginia Tech in 1983, followed by a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Christopher Newport College in 1988.

Her career was marked by dedication and integrity. Janet served as an auditor for the Virginia Department of Taxation, where her attention to detail and commitment to excellence were evident. Later, she became the business owner of JP Company of Virginia, through which she continued to demonstrate her expertise and leadership.

Janet was also a committed member of several esteemed organizations, and a life long tennis and golf enthusiast. She was a long-term member of the Richmond Ski Club, the Ut Prosim and Legacy Societies, and a passionate supporter of Virginia Tech athletic programs, particularly tennis and the Corps of Cadets. Her connection to Virginia Tech was deep and enduring, reflecting her devotion to the institution and its values.

She was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Melvin Bryan Poulson and Bertha Woodcock "Bert" Poulson. Janet is survived by her uncle, Stanley Dean Woodcock; cousins, Patricia Woodcock Jenkins, Charles Woodcock Jr., Jeffrey Woodcock, Chuck McLaurin, Tony Thomas, and Ronald H. Williams; and life long friend, Terrie B. Rose; all of whom will miss her dearly.

Family, friends, and those whose lives Janet touched are invited to celebrate her life and legacy. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, May 29, 2026, at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Suffolk, Virginia, with Rev. Dr. Keith Emerson officiating. Visitation will take place the same day from noon until 1:30 pm at Parr Funeral Home & Crematory. A memorial service will be held at a later date in Richmond, Virginia.
