James Middleton Swindells, Jr., 83, of Smithfield, VA passed away November 17, 2009. He was born in Newburgh, NY the son of the late Gertrude Geahardt and James Middleton Swindells, Sr. He was predeceased by his sister, Jeannette Smith. James retired from the Army as a Sergeant First Class. He served during WWII, the Korean Conflict, 66 months in Vietnam, and during the Cuban Missile Crisis. James went on to retire from N.N.A.R.F. as an Aircraft Mechanic.
James was a member and volunteered with the Disabled American Veterans Association at the Veterans Hospital, Vietnam Vets, Veterans Association, Army Otter-Caribou Association, Hampton American Legion, Newport News Moose Lodge, Phoebus VFW, N.C.O.A., and the N.R.A.
James is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, James M. Swindells, III and Despina of Kodak, TN, Robert E. Swindells and Linda Smith of Grandy, NC, William A. Swindells and Kathy of Williamsburg, VA, Tai D. Swindells and Sherry of Smithfield, VA; 7 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held Monday, November 23, 2009 at 2 p.m. at Parr Funeral Home & Crematory, 3515 Robs Dr., Suffolk, VA 23434. Burial with full military honors will follow at Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery. Friends may join the family Sunday night from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home.
