Obituary

James Franklin Stephenson, 87, passed away at home and went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on July 14, 2025. James was born in Franklin, VA.  He was a native and lifelong resident of Isle of Wight, VA, and was the son of the late James Oliver Stephenson, Jr., and Nora Atkins Stephenson.  He was predeceased by his wife of 64 years, Carolyn Holland Stephenson, brother, William Thomas Stephenson, brother-in-law, Johnny Joyner, and Sister-in-law, Shirley H. Oliver.  James retired from Newport News Shipyard as a foreman after 39 years.  He served in the United States Army National Guard for 7 years and was a Senior Regional Leader in Primerica since 1987, helping many families with their finances.  James was a devoted Christian and a member of Living Hope Community Fellowship (formerly Pine Grove Assembly of God) and served as Deacon and Trustee for many years.

James is survived by his son, James Russell Stephenson, and wife Sylvia.  Two grandchildren, James Craig Stephenson and Rebecca Lynn Stephenson. Sister, Mary Ann Joyner of Wakefield, VA.  Sister-in-law, Nellie Wells Stephenson, brother-in-law, John Oliver, nieces and nephews; Lenora Adams, Tammy Lanier, Jill Fitzkee, Blake Stephenson and Scott Harrison.

We are truly grateful for his recent caregivers, Brittany Sylvester and Coretta King who fell in love with him and administered the best of care.  A special thank you also to the Heartland Hospice team.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, August 2, 2025, at 11 a.m. at Living Hope Community Fellowship, 10001 Fire Tower Rd., Windsor, VA 23487 with Pastor Dr.  Kevin Myatt officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service beginning at 10 a.m. at the church.
