James Everett "Pop" Baldwin, 82, passed away at his home in Carrollton, VA May 6, 2009 surrounded in love by his family after a long and brave battle with lung and heart disease. Born February 28, 1927 in Wilco, West Virginia. He was raised in Little Prater, VA. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He moved to Carrollton in 1952 when he began a 38 year career at NNSB & Dry Dock. After retirement in February 1990 and until his illness he enjoyed his gardening and tinkering in "Pop's" garage with Randy and Keith.
Pop was a founding member of the Carrollton Volunteer Fire Department and attended Faith Free Will Baptist Church in Carrollton.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 51 years, Sybil Day Baldwin. Left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Iretta Baldwin Joyner and her husband, Keith; his son, Everett R. "Randy" Baldwin and his wife, Jacquelynn; two granddaughters, Amy Renee Messerole and Cynthia Lou Baker, and one great granddaughter, Erin Renee Phippins.
Pop cared deeply about his family and had a wonderful gift for connecting with and helping others. He was a kind and gentle man who never met a stranger. He was happiest when spending time with his family. He meant a great deal to many people and will be greatly missed.
A graveside service will be held Friday, May 8, 2009 at 2 p.m. at St. Luke's Memorial Park, Smithfield, VA with Rev. Russell Leonard officiating. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6-9 p.m. at the residence, 15616 Carrollton Blvd. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, May 13, 2009 at 7 p.m. at Faith Free Will Baptist Church 16053 Carrollton Blvd, Carrollton, VA with Rev. Barry Reel officiating. Memorial donations may be made to the Carrollton Volunteer Fire Department at 15020 Carrollton Blvd., Carrollton, VA 23314. Parr Funeral Home & Crematory, Suffolk, VA is serving the family.
