Obituary

Ivey Mae Griffin Holland, 89, died peacefully on February 1, 2018. She was surrounded by her family at home in Windsor, VA.

Ivey Mae is survived by her husband of 71 years, Curtis M. Holland; daughters, Frances E. Holland, Connie H. Klass (Kelly), and Phyllis H. Thibedeau (Dave); brother, George W. Griffin (Mary); 6 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. She is predeceased by her foster daughter, Alice Ray P. Bridger.

Ivey Mae was born on April 30, 1928 on a farm in Isle of Wight Co. to the late A. Bransford Griffin and Nellie Mae Hall Griffin. She graduated from Windsor High School in June 1946. She married Curtis shortly after in July. After moving to Franklin, Ivey Mae worked in the office at the airport before settling in Holland in 1953. When the girls were young, Ivey Mae stayed home and raised them. When they were of school age, Ivey Mae found her calling as a well-loved bookkeeper for Suffolk City Public Schools from where she retired. She continued her love of children by being a volunteer reading tutor at Mack Benn Jr. Elementary School.

Ivey Mae was accomplished in fiber arts and often smocked dresses for her granddaughters, knitted and crocheted afghans for many people, and tatted lace. She was a member of the Woman's Clubs of Holland and Windsor for more than 50 years, and an associate member of Holland Ruritan Club (the Mother Club) and nicknamed "Baby Ruritan". So that her daughters could experience civic responsibility, Ivey Mae was a Girl Scout leader and a Past Guardian Treasurer for the International Order of Job's Daughters, Bethel 28, Suffolk, VA. While a member of Holland Baptist Church, Ivey Mae taught Sunday School, organized and directed the bell choir, and was a choir member. Upon returning to the Orbit area and the church of her youth, Woodland UMC, she was an active member, taught Sunday School, and played the piano and the antique pump organ for special events.

Her funeral will be 2:00p, Monday, February 5, 2018 in Parr Funeral Home & Crematory with Revs. Mandy Newman and Robert Cofield officiating. Visitation will be in Parr's from 6–8:00p Sunday. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Aimee Blatchford Scholarship Fund, c/o Woodland UMC, 20051 Orbit Rd, Windsor, VA 23487, the Windsor Volunteer Rescue Squad, PO Box 636, 19 E Windsor Blvd, Windsor, VA 23487 or the Khedive Shrine Transportation Fund, 645 Woodlake Dr, Chesapeake, VA 23320.
