Helen moved to several cities in North Carolina and Virginia when her husband's construction job sites changed. In 1998, 8 years after her husband's death, she moved from Suffolk, VA to Lakeland, FL to be near her daughter, Vickie. She enjoyed the warmer winters which allowed her to continue her walking regimen that she was so dedicated to doing after her cardiac surgery in the late 1980s. New cardiac issues in 2008 did not permit her to continue daily fitness walks. She was an accomplished seamstress, who created many clothing items and other treasured heirlooms for family and friends. In August 2015, she moved to Clarksburg, WV where her daughter Judy provided for her mother's care and comfort in her home until early August of this year.
Helen was a member of Southside Baptist Church during the 26 years she lived in Suffolk and a member of Medulla Baptist Church in Lakeland, FL where she enjoyed the fellowship of her Ruth Sunday School class.
