Hugh Dewitt
Byrd, Sr.
April 10, 1940 – May 9, 2023
Hugh Dewitt Byrd, Sr., 83, passed away May 9, 2023. He was born in Erwin, NC the son of the late Theodore Roosevelt Byrd and Eula Knowles Byrd. Hugh retired from Newport News Shipbuilding as a Powerhouse Operator. He was a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, a member of Methodist Men and a choir member for 25 years. Hugh was also a member of the Chuckatuck Ruritan Club, McAlister Masonic Lodge 185, Scottish Rites, Khedive Shrine, Past Master of Nansemond Masonic Lodge 77, and Road Runner Shriners.
Hugh is survived by his wife of 62 years, Helen Pamela Moore Byrd; daughter, Cynthia Byrd Baker; son, Hugh "Bubba" Dewitt Byrd, Jr. (Caroline); grandchildren, Ann Marie Longley, Christina B. Drumheller (Wes), Jaimie B. Channell (Corey), Richard A. Baker, Jr.; great grandchildren, Joshua, Cody, Bradley, Brandon, MaKenzie, Andrew, Roman, Riley, Avery, Landon and nephew, Roger C. Groth.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, May 13, 2023 at 4:00 p.m. at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, 220 Kings Highway, Suffolk, VA 23432 with Rev. Dr. Michael Adedokun and Rev. Brandon Nichols officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. A visitation with Masonic Rites will be held Friday, May 12, 2023 from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. at Parr Funeral Home and Crematory, 3515 Robs Drive, Suffolk, VA 23434. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Shriners Hospital for Children. Condolences may be registered online at www.parrfuneralhome.com.
