Obituary

Hubert Foy Askew (Strawberry), 72 of Suffolk, passed away July 11, 2017.  He was born August 3, 1944 to Hubert and Bonnie (Early) Askew in Harrellsville, NC.  He worked as a truck driver for over 50 years.  He spent most of those years with Spencer Transfer and finished with BFV Tank Liner.  He traveled the Tidewater/Hampton Roads and Northeastern NC areas delivering gas, water and fertilizer.  He had 'offices' at Lee's Diner in South Norfolk and Bunny's Restaurant in Suffolk.

He was preceded in death by his parents.  He is also preceded in death by his daughter, Deborah Faye (1974 – 2000).  He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Faye Harrell Askew, son David Askew and daughter in law Joanne of Suffolk, VA and daughter Dianne Askew Telford and son in law Lucas of Oshkosh, WI.  Also surviving are grandsons Joseph Askew, Ethan Telford and Keegan Telford and granddaughters Claire Askew, Chloe' Telford Tschudy (Jacob) and Paisleigh Telford.  There are many nieces and nephews that will miss Uncle Foy as well as in laws and out laws that he welcomed throughout his life.  Along with the family there are many that worked with him or shared a cup of coffee with him that will know something is missing as they go about their day.

Foy was a great fan of sports and shared that with his children and grandchildren.  He was known as a Yankees, UNC Chapel Hill and Oakland Raiders fan.  Foy attended many local sporting events including ABA basketball, ODU basketball, Tidewater Tides baseball and he had a tradition with his son and nephews to attend many NBA All Star games.  While he watched many up and coming stars, his most recent favorite event to attend was of his grandchildren to watch whatever they were doing.

Foy was an avid NASCAR fan and shared that love with everyone.  He traveled to many tracks and was a permanent seat holder at several.  The race day experience included a full day of dining from Foy's mobile kitchen.  Foy was known for his cooking skills and often cooked for large groups of people as a love offering.  He was his happiest when he was sporting his apron. He never met a grill he couldn't work or a chicken he couldn't fry to perfection.  He and his wife passed this love down to their children who serve their community and friends with the same love of cooking.

He never wanted a big fuss so the family respectfully asks that in lieu of flowers that donations are made to the American Cancer Society or to Boys Scouts Troop #1 of Main Street Methodist or Girl Scouts Troop #5357 of Main Street Methodist Suffolk, VA.

The family would like to thank his team at Virginia Oncology Associate, Dr. Mark Fleming and NP Kelly Byrum as well as the team at Riverside Hospital for how they cared for him.

Please join the family for visitation on Friday July 14 th from 6:00 – 8:30 and again for a celebration of his life on Saturday July 15 th at 4pm at Parr Funeral Home and Crematory.  Condolences may be registered online at www.parrfuneralhome.com
