Obituary

Herbert James Miller (HJ) died on Monday, March 2, 2026 in Suffolk, Virginia.  He was born in Uniontown, Pennsylvania on April 21, 1940.

He was predeceased by his parents Karl and Marguerite Baer Miller, infant daughter Amber Leigh Miller, son Brendan J. Miller, and his sisters Pricilla Joan Scheetz and Barbara Sue Terry.

HJ joined the United States Navy at age 17 and served on the CVN Franklin D. Roosevelt in air intelligence, CVN Enterprise as the air group attached to RVAH6 and the FRSN Concord as a detachment from HC6.

While aboard the Franklin D. Roosevelt he made two med cruises and was a member of the Seafarers 42, a male choir and sang in various port cities in the Mediterranean.  While on the Enterprise he completed one med cruise which turned into an all nuclear around the world cruise with only three port stops in Karachi Pakistan, Sydney Australia and Rio de Janeiro Brazil.

Upon retiring from the Navy, he worked for the Department of Defense at the Naval Aviation Depot in Norfolk Virginia for 21 years as a highly awarded sheet metal mechanic with two Presidential Citations.

His community involvements include:  In 1987 he joined the Kiwanis Club of Suffolk where over the years he served three times as President and as Distinguished Secretary for eleven years.  The annual fundraiser for Kiwanis, which provides scholarships to local high school students is the selling of packed peanuts.  HJ was well known by local banks and businesses for his product deliveries.

In 1999 he joined the Izaak Walton League of America, a distinguished nationally known conservation organization.  He served as President three and a half years and three years as a National Director.

In 2008 he joined the Fraternal Order of the Moose, Lodge #41 in Suffolk and was named Lodge Moose of the Year in 2014.

HJ was an accomplished carpenter and home renovator.  He loved to fish, talking to everyone and helping anyone in need.  He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.

He is survived by his wife Suzanne Heard Miller; sons, Robin Scott Miller of Florida, Corey Aaron Miller and wife Tina Miller (daughter-in-law) of Chesapeake, Virginia; granddaughters, Brianna and Summer Miller of Moyock;, North Carolina; grandson, Kadan Livingstone of Monroe, North Carolina; sister, Faye Marie Hendricks of Florida; brother, David Blaine Miller of Florida; brothers-in-law, Tom Atkinson, Michael Heard (Beth); cousin-in-law, Cathy Barrington and his first daughter-in-law, Lorie Fancher.  He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and grand nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at Albert G. Horton, Jr., Memorial Veterans Cemetery at a later day.  Parr Funeral Home will be assisting the family. Condolences may be registered online at www.parrfuneralhome.com.
