Helen Darden Rogers, 86, she was born on August 21, 1927 and passed away on May 17, 2014. She was the youngest of five girls born to John and Lydia Darden of Suffolk, VA. She was a graduate of Suffolk High School. Helen was a bookkeeper and lead secretary for Virginia Farm Bureau Insurance Agency. She worked with the farm bureau when it was just beginning as an office in the home of Telford Copeland of Suffolk, VA. She was married to James Wesley Rogers May 5, 1951 and spent her whole life in Suffolk, VA until February of 2013 when she moved to Raleigh, NC to the Haven at Waterford Landing, a group home for seniors. There, she found a family of new friends and caregivers who loved her dearly for her smiles, laughter, and kindness. She was always smiling and joyful even through her illness with Alzheimers. Miss Helen Rogers epitomizes what it means to be a lady and will be surely missed by all who loved her. In her earlier years, she was a very active member of Cypress Chapel Christian Church and loved her community and friends there. She was a member of the Robin Ferrell Circle, The Sonshine Circle, The Women's Bible Class at Cypress Chapel Christian Church, The Virginia Farm Bureau Womens Association, The Riverview Garden Club, and the Epicurean Club. The Epicurean club held a special place in her heart. These were her lifelong friends and the club has been in existence since 1949. The club was a group that loved to play bridge and pinochle, share desserts, friendship and vacations. These friends meant the world to Miss Helen. Miss Helen loved the beach and going to the outer banks. She loved to knit, crochet, cook and spend time with her grandchildren.
Helen is survived by her son, Steven Wesley Rogers; daughter and son-in-law, Ann Rogers Adams and Clayton Wade Adams; grandchildren, Anna Grace Adams and James Darden Adams; sisters, Dorothy Darden Walton and Virginia Darden Braddock; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held Tuesday, May 20, 2014 at 2 p.m. at Holly Lawn Cemetery with Rev. Willis Dowling officiating. Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Research Foundation.
