Helen Joan (nee: Lawrence) Bulluck (aka: Joie) was born on October 31, 1926, in New Bern, NC, the daughter of Harry C. and Helen N. Lawrence, and moved into eternal life on Wednesday, August 31, 2016. Although her body has completed its final physical shut down, her spirit still flies high-- carried on by her five surviving children and their spouses: Katherine A. Hildebrant (Robert A.) of Windsor, VA; Daphne B. Behrmann (Randy) of Belleville, IL; Harry S. Bulluck (Tammy) of Wilmington, DE; Helen B. Ratcliff (Robert) of Suffolk, VA; Betsy B. Thiede (Matthew) of Glen Allen, VA; a sister-in-law, Frances M. Bulluck, and a brother-in-law, J. Davis Bulluck Jr; 16 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, along with a host of new and life-long friends.
Prior to becoming a "rock star" mother, Joie spent many years in classical voice training at the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University, only to emerge as a brilliant opera singer—"clearing her pipes" as she would always say! Her radio career singing opera was soon to be traded in for a husband and six children. Mom also attended Georgetown University, ultimately landing a career as a Social Worker and years later a Real Estate Agent. Along with her "paying" careers, she was extremely proud of her membership and support of the Women's Republican Party group—anyone who knows her knows that politics was a burning passion of hers and the topic should be avoided at all costs!
After a whirlwind courtship in 1950, Joie married Fred Jefferson Bulluck on March 31, 1951. Joan & Jeff found themselves following their careers in various places in the East Coast, Baltimore, Charlottesville, Portsmouth, and finally Corapeake. To say that Joie never knew a stranger would be an understatement—she made new friends where ever she was and continued those relationships for the rest of her life (as evidenced by the 500+ Christmas cards she religiously wrote notes in and mailed out each year). Her ability to make friends carried through to Corapeake where she developed lasting friendships with neighbors, community members, as well as her "Church Circle". When Dad retired, they started bird watching and participated in the "Meals on Wheels" program for over 14 years serving the Suffolk, VA region.
Mom will be deeply missed by all of her loved ones, both family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, four siblings (Rosemary, Betty, Patsy, and David), her loving husband, Fred Jefferson Bulluck, Sr. as well as her son, Fred Jefferson Bulluck, Jr and his wife (Debbie). Friends and relatives are invited to attend a Memorial Service for Joan on Saturday, Sept 17, 2016, starting at 2:30PM at 3501 Cedar Lane, Portsmouth, VA 23703. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society, 4416 Expressway Dr, Virginia Beach, Virginia 23452 or Meals on Wheels Inc., 2800 Godwin Blvd, Suffolk, VA 23434.
