Geraldine Baines
Speight
April 21, 1938 – September 20, 2023
Geraldine Baines Speight, 85, passed away on September 20, 2023. She was born in Nansemond County, VA the daughter of the late Shirley M. Baines and Thelma M. Baines. She was predeceased by her husband of 63 years, Robert Starling Speight; and sister, Martha Ann Hill. Geraldine, or "Gerry" as her family and friends knew her, was a loving mother, grandmother, and friend to all. She served and retired from the City of Suffolk after 30 years of service. She was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church and the Women's Mission Union.
Gerry's main passion in life was spending time with her family and helping others. She made many memories in Nags Head, NC with her family, especially with her granddaughters, Pamela and Nicole. She excelled in the kitchen, her garden and making every holiday special for her family. She would drop anything to attend sports games and plays that her granddaughters were involved in. Gerry left many memories, traditions and a love that will forever carry on through those closest to her.
Gerry is survived by her son, Robert Benjamin and Bonnie West Speight; grandchildren, Pamela S. and John Merrick, Nicole S. and Christopher Matzen; great-grandchildren, Robert A. Merrick, Emma M. Matzen, Corbin J. Matzen, Tolson S. Merrick, and Jolie W. Matzen; brother, Thomas L. Baines.
A graveside service will be held Monday, September 25, 2023 at 2 p.m. at Eureka Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Rob Slingluff officiating and Beth Polson as eulogist.
