George Ottway
Taylor, Jr.
November 26, 1927 – June 9, 2025
George O. Taylor, Jr., Colonel (USA, ret), born 26Nov1927 in Miami, FL, passed away on 09June2025. He graduated from the University of GA with a law degree in 1950, was commissioned in the Army and sent to Korea to command a rifle platoon. He fought in the historic battle of the Chosin Reservoir and was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge and a Bronze Star. He became a tank platoon leader, participated in numerous battles, including the 1951 defense of Seoul, and was awarded a Bronze Star for heroism. In the early 1960's, his armored cavalry battalion protected the East-West German border from the communists. In 1962, he moved to the JAG (Judge Advocate General's Corp) and was one of the main writers of the 1969 Courts-Martial Manual. He became an appellate judge and received 3 Legion of Merit Medals for his legal service. After 23.5 years of military service, he retired from the Army. He became chief counsel for OSHA, then administrative law Judge for Social Security. After retiring in the late 1980's he volunteered at the VA Beach Visitors Center for 10 years and as a tax counselor for AARP and Disabled American Veterans for 12 years.
He is survived by his wife Joyce, of 72 years, 3 daughters, Leeanne, Amy, and Nancy; 3 grandchildren, Chris, Taylor, and Leighanna; and 2 great-grandchildren, Lizzy and Benton. Services are private with burial at the Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery. Parr Funeral Home & Crematory is serving the family, www.parrfuneralhome.com.
