George "Spunk" Lafayette Gwaltney, III, 77, passed away January 27, 2009. He was born in Suffolk, VA the son of the late Virginia Mayo Gwaltney and George L. Gwaltney, Jr. He was a veteran having served in the U.S. Coast Guard. Spunk retired from the Virginia Department of Transportation as a Highway Inspector. He was also the owner and operator of the Gwaltney Store in Chuckatuck. He was a member of Oakland Christian Church, the American Legion where he served as past Commander, and Masonic Lodge A.F. & A.M. #77 where he served as past Master.
Spunk is survived by his wife of 55 years, Martha V. Gwaltney of Suffolk, VA, daughter and son-in-law, Deborah G. and Wayne C. Renfrow of Virginia Beach, VA; sons and daughter-in-law, George Paul Gwaltney of Windsor, VA and special friend, Kelly McCann, Kent Lee and Carolyn H. Gwaltney of Suffolk, VA; grandchildren, Robert Warren, Leslie Hamrick, and Lindsay Steele, step grandsons, Brenan Oliver and Wayne C. Renfrow, II; great grandchild, Emma Caroline Hamrick; aunt and uncle, Eloise and Jack Bailey of Nashville, TN.
A graveside service will be held Friday, January 30, 2009 at 11 a.m. at Newman Memorial Cemetery behind Oakland Christian Church with Rev. Mark Burns officiating. Friends may join the family Thursday evening from 7-8 p.m. at Parr Funeral Home & Crematory, 3515 Robs Dr., Suffolk, VA. Masonic Rites will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday evening.
