George Paul Gwaltney, born on September 25, 1955, in Nansemond County, Virginia, passed away peacefully on May 22, 2026, in Windsor, Virginia, at the age of 70.
Paul was the beloved son of the late George Lafayette "Spunk" Gwaltney III and Martha Valencia Gwaltney; he was also the beloved grandson of the late G.L. Gwaltney Jr, Virginia Mayo Gwaltney, Paul Valencia, and Eleanor Bell Valencia. He grew up with a strong sense of family and community, values that guided him throughout his life. Paul graduated from Elon College in 1978, and was a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity.
Paul was a dedicated businessman, known in the community as an owner of Jalapenos Mexican Restaurant and The Grille in Smithfield, Virginia, as well as the former owner of Steamers Restaurant in Carrollton, Virginia. His work reflected his commitment to providing a welcoming place for people to gather and enjoy good food.
Being the avid softball player, he coached and sponsored a traveling team named, "G.P. Gwaltney Softball". He enjoyed the game so much, that he even donned the #7 jersey and played with his team throughout their travels.
He is survived by his loving sister, Deborah Gwaltney Renfrow; his devoted brother, Kent L. Gwaltney; and numerous friends, fraternity brothers, and teammates. Paul was a cherished family member and friend who will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
A celebration of Paul's life will be held on Saturday, May 30, 2026, at 11:00 am at Oakland Christian Church, with Rev. Jason Stump officiating. In accordance with the family's wishes, those attending are encouraged to dress casually and bring memories to share of Paul.
Paul's laughter, sheepish grin, kindness, and warm presence will be remembered by all whose lives he touched.
