Obituary

Ethel Duke Nichols, 88, of Suffolk, VA passed away July 2, 2006. She was born May 15, 1918 in Nansemond County, Virginia

In her earlier career Ethel was a professional color artist and worked for several studios. She later went on to own and operate the Washington Square Gift Shop in Suffolk, VA. In 1984 Ethel started working as a hostess for Hill Funeral Home, now known as Parr Funeral Home, and continued to work for 22 years serving the community. She was a member of Liberty Spring Christian Church where she was a member of the Ladies Bible Class. She was also a member of the Sunshine Circle in the Women's Fellowship Group, House of Worship Committee, and the Evangelism Committee. Ethel helped to organize the Joy Gift Shop in the church and was a former Sunday School Teacher. Other Memberships: She was also a member of the Liberty Spring Senior Citizens Club. Ethel was the daughter of the late, Henrietta Turner Duke and William Elisha Duke. She was also predeceased by her husband of 55 years, Charlie Emery Nichols, and a brother, John Thomas Duke. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Judith N. and Richard J. Kovalik; sons and daughters-in-law, J. Emery and Sue H. Nichols, and W. T. "Tom" and Midge R. Nichols all of Suffolk, VA; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren; sisters and brother-in-law, Lucille D. Turner, and Irene D. and D.B. "Duke" Smith; brother, W. Ralph Duke all of Suffolk, VA.

A Funeral Service will be held Thursday, July 6, 2006 at 3:00 p.m. at Liberty Spring Christian Church with Rev. Allen L. Lancaster officiating. Friends may join the family Wednesday night at Parr Funeral Home from 7:00-9:00 p.m. and other times at her residence. Burial will be at Liberty Spring Christian Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Liberty Spring Christian Church Memorial Fund at 4213 Whaleyville Blvd. Suffolk, VA 23434.
