Dorris Hale Holman Macklin, 102, peacefully passed away October 8, 2022.  She was born in Sykesville, MD the daughter of the late George Neal Holman and Mary Williams Holman. Her brother Richard Holman and her husband of 47 years, John Lewis Macklin predeceased her.  Early in her life her family moved to St. Augustine FL, where she grew up.  Dorris was a child of the Great Depression and developed a strong work ethic early in life.  In order to pay for her education at Sanford University in Deland FL, she played the oboe in bands and orchestras.   When WWII began, she joined the United States Navy as an officer in the WAVES.  She went on to serve after the war as an educational specialist for the Department of Defense and trained new pilots on a flight simulator at Whiting Field FL. She obtained a commercial pilot's license while working at Whiting Field.  Traveling with her husband in their RV and participating in the RV club was a favorite pastime after retirement.   They visited all the states and parts of Canada during their traveling years. After spending the majority of her adult life in Pensacola FL she and her husband only moved to Smithfield VA within the last 16 years.   She was a tiny woman with a quiet personality but that did not stop her from accomplishing big things. She will be missed.

Dorris is survived by her stepdaughter and son-in-law, Rhonda and Lawrence Evans; granddaughter, Sara Evans Shih and husband, Ian.

A celebration of life will be held at Smithfield Villas clubhouse at 1pm on 10-29-22.  The inurnment for both John and Dorris will be at Barrancas National Cemetery in Pensacola, FL.  In lieu of flowers, please thank a veteran for their service.  Condolences may be registered online at www.parrfuneralhome.com.
