Obituary

Dorothy Jean Woods, affectionately known as "Dot," passed away peacefully on February 25, 2026, in Suffolk, Virginia, at the age of 94. Born on July 30, 1931, in Westerly, Rhode Island, Dot lived a life characterized by warmth, kindness, and a deep love for her family and friends.

Dot spent her professional career in the textile industry, where she worked diligently in quality control until her retirement. Her attention to detail and commitment to excellence were admired by all who had the privilege to work alongside her.

In her later years, Dot found joy and companionship at the Westerly Senior Center, where she was a cherished member. She particularly enjoyed practicing Tai Chi, sharing many laughs and creating lasting memories with her friends.  Over the years she enjoyed sipping her coffee and watching the birds.  In the summer, she loved working in the garden and watching it flourish.

Dot is preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Laura Gledhill; her former husband, Walter Woods; and her siblings, Albert Gledhill, Florence Waters, Hilda Buchanan, Peggy Marcotte, and Winnie Wright.

She leaves behind a loving family who will forever treasure her memory: her son, Walter Woods, and his wife Michelle; her grandchildren, Sean Woods and his wife Maddie, Candace Woods and her husband Dustin, Kelly Oliver and her husband Jacob, and Audrey "Tootsie" Woods. Dot was also blessed with great-grandchildren Hudson, Laken, Elliot, Colton, and a baby on the way, Riley. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews who held a special place in her heart.

A private memorial service will be held later this summer in Westerly, Rhode Island, with burial at Riverbend Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial donations be made to the Westerly Animal Shelter, 33 Larry Hirsch Lane, Westerly, RI 02891, in honor of Dot's lifelong love for animals.

The family extends their deepest gratitude to the Heartland Hospice team, especially Risper, Natalie, Erica, and many others who provided compassionate care. A special thank you to Pam Holland, who was a devoted caretaker and dear friend to Dot.

Dot will be remembered for her gentle spirit and the love she shared with everyone around her. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
