Chesley Vernon Stokes, 89, passed away February 27, 2014. A native of Roanoke Rapids, NC he was the son of the late Monroe and Cora Daniels Stokes. He is also predeceased by his son, Steve Kurtz, and two sisters, Fannie Belle Smith and Dorothy Mae Austin. Chesley was a retired plumber and pipe fitter (Local 540). He was a member of Central Hill Baptist Church, Deacon and served on the Property Committee. He was a Veteran of the US Navy and the Merchant Maritime Marines.

Chesley is survived by his wife, Audrey S. Stokes; step daughter, Dianne S. Stallings (Tommy); two grandchildren, Lisa Kurtz Barbee and Steve Kurtz; two great grandchildren, Ronald Bruce and Josh Kurtz; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held Wednesday, March 5, 2014 at 2 p.m. at Central Hill Baptist Church, Windsor, VA with Dr. Don Rhoton officiating. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 1 to 2 p.m. A reception will follow the service in the church social hall. Burial will be Thursday, March 6, 2014 at 12 noon in Sunset Hill Cemetery, Littleton, NC with Rev. Tommy Reynolds officiating.
