Carolyn Freeman
Glover
May 19, 1944 – January 5, 2021
Carolyn Langhorne Freeman Glover died in her sleep early in the morning of January 5th, 2021 from heart related issues. She was a devoted mother, daughter, friend, and neighbor.
Carolyn was born on May 19th, 1944 in Suffolk, Virginia to her parents Robert (Bussie) Langhorne Freeman and Tessie Evelyn Gardner Freeman.
She was thought of as the "apple of her Mother's eye." Growing up on family farms most of her life, Carolyn was a self proclaimed tomboy who dearly loved being around all animals and learning about them. The only animals she didn't care for were geese that often chased her as a child. Her favorite animals were dogs. She would have many over her lifetime. She adopted many dogs often finding the hardest cases that she somehow won over with food and affection. Often they only loved her and no one else but she made sure they were loved.
Having a mother that cherished reading and who wanted to become a librarian, there was no question that Carolyn would go to College. She first went to Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg, Virginia, which was the women's equivalent of University of Virginia at the time. She later in life would go on to receive her Master's Degree in Education at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. In her later years, Carolyn was an avid fan of PBS TV and watched every show that was aired. She could tell you the most interesting facts about a variety of topics creating interesting conversation. The last show she discussed was about Vikings.
Carolyn taught for many years in a variety of Middle Schools and High Schools in the area. She also worked in various roles as a civilian working at the Naval Hospital. Her last role before retiring was working with the medical boards and helping ServiceMen and Women receive their benefits as they exited their service. She was tenacious at this role as she was passionate about caring for these folks and wanted to ensure their paperwork and appropriate benefits were received. She was an extremely hard worker and a well respected friend to all that she worked with.
Carolyn dearly loved horses and having wanted one of her own all her life, she ensured that her daughter, Nancy, promptly began riding at 3. She enjoyed many years with Nancy at horse shows, 4-H meetings, horse judging competitions and the like, always with a full trunk of snacks for all the kids and parents. Those are some of her daughter's favorite memories.
To have known Carolyn would be to know that if she counted you as a friend, neighbor, co-worker, or family, she was fiercely loyal, fiercely loving, expected and fought for fairness for all, and felt deeply tied to her family roots and upbringing. She will be dearly missed on this earth but surrounded by the family she cherished in heaven.
Carolyn is predeceased by her parents, Robert Langhorne Freeman and Tessie Evelyn Gardner Freeman and a beloved Aunt, Alice Gardner Rollins.
Carolyn is survived by her daughter, Nancy Carolyn Glover, her son in law, Spencer Calvin Smith, cousins Nancy Burgess and Gardner Rollins, as well as her dear friend that was like a second daughter, Angie Kmieciak.
There will be a private service held at Parr Funeral Home. Carolyn will be interred at Wakefield Cemetery at a later date. Condolences may be registered online at www.parrfuneralhome.com.
